Divi-Dead
For those of you not familiar with this game, it’s made by the legendary C’s Ware, a maker of H-games such as Gloria and
Fatal relations. This is the kind of game much more known for it’s story than it’s sexual content, although the hentai is
a good deal better than several games I’ve played. But if you don’t like H-games with good stories, don’t bother with this
one.
Story: 9/10
This game’s story is what got me on to H-games in the first place. You play Ranmaru, a boy who was hospitalized for most of
his childhood with a strange disease. Years later, the game begins when you’re sent to your ‘uncle’’s private school, to
spy for him and research “the scent”, a strange odour that many of the students carry with them. Eventually, the plot
becomes much deeper, leading to demons, and satanic rituals that were practiced at the school long ago. The only reason
I didn’t give the story 10/10, is because near the end of the game everything happens so fast, that when you finish it’s
pretty much granted that you’ll be thinking “What the hell just happened?”. It doesn’t really explain as much as it could,
but there’s multiple ending based on some decisions you make throughout the game, which will explain more and more of what
happened.
Characters: 9/10
Ranmaru: 9/10
The main character, the one you control. At first glampse, he seems simple enough, but as the plot gets deeper, you find
that Ranmaru has some secrets that are much unlike those of any character’s past I’ve ever seen.
Azusa: 8/10
Was Ranmaru’s best friend as a child, she dissapeared one day and Ranmaru didn’t see her again until he ran into her on
his first day at the Dean’s school, where she denied knowing him. She ends up having a similar role to Ranmaru in her reasons
for being at the school, though she doesn’t want Ranmaru to get involved.
Kimihito: 8/10
This guy seems nice at a glance, but he turns out to be a very dark character. He abuses his girlfriend Haruka, and gets
violently jealous of other guys when they get her attention.
Yuka: 9/10
At first, Yuka seems like a stupid little brat, but you can tell there’s something odd about him due to his extreme strength
compared to his build. Yuka looks like a child, but he is the same age as Ranmaru. They end up becoming good friends, though
Yuka turns out to be not the average high school student later in the game.
Yuko: 7/10
Yuko is a hard character to follow. She lives near the outskirts of the school, and is one of the founders. She is seen
a few times by Ranmaru before they really talk, and each time she acts very cold to him. She is a similar character to Yuka,
and they appear to know each other, but how?
Nishizaki: 8/10
Nishizaki is your typical jerk, an asshole with a group of assholes for friends, and said by himself to hate compassion.
You learn more about his reasons later in the game, and you’ll feel sorry for him due to his fate in the game.
The Dean: ?
The Dean is apparently Ranmaru’s uncle, but Ranmaru doesn’t really know if they’re blood related or not. You never really
learn much about him, he’s more of a minor character.
Sano: 9/10
Sano is strong, and very fit, obviously that makes him the… Art teacher?
If you think Nishizaki is bad, you will hate this guy. Sano is a complete asshole at first, and after he finds out Ranmaru’s
related to the Dean he starts trying to suck up to him. I hate this guy, which is why he got a good rating.
Nurse Aki: 9/10
Aki is possibly the game’s fanbase’s favourite character. She’s a nice lady, and cares about Ranmaru, and doesn’t seem to
have much of a ulterior motive, but she is definately strange, as you can tell if you choose to see her over Mayumi at a
point in the game. Fan speculation has many theories about her, some of them quite strange.
Mayumi: 8/10
Mayumi is the librarian, and she somehow knows the Dean. She’s sort of like a caring mother figure to Ranmaru, and is also
a descendant of the school’s founders, though not related to Yuko.
Mami: 6/10
Mami is a bit younger than Ranmaru, and her childlike acting is probably the reason I don’t really like her. She ends up
with a cruel fate in the school’s rituals.
Haruka: 8/10
Haruka seems like a nice girl at first, but she turns out to be one of the worst characters of the bunch. Not to give away
too much, she is also the victim of Kimihito’s abuse, and is often a rape target.
Shotaro: ?
Shotaro is definately the strangest character of the lot. He can sometimes be seen talking to other people, but Shotaro
never talks to Ranmaru. His role is unknown.
Sachiko & Miki: 9/10
Sachiko & Miki are sisters, and are like complete opposites. They both work at the Tea Ceremony Club, and Ranmaru talks to
them to get information about “the scent”.
Juichi: ?
Ranmaru knows Juichi… But from where? Just who is this?
Graphics: 9/10
The graphics are very well done compared to most hentai games. The characters are drawn beautifully, and it seems as though
the same amount of detail gone into the characters has gone into every single small item in the background as well.
Being that Divi-Dead is also a horror game, the graphics do very well in producing a horror atmosphere, and even the
violent scenes have lots of detail put into every bit of blood on the screen. *Yes, there are some very violent parts in
the game, you have been warned.* The main problem with the graphics is that the gamma correction isn’t all that good on
all PCs, and you may need the program IPGamma to see some things properly.
Music & sound: 10/10 and unrated.
The music in this game is amazing. The music really helps set the atmosphere, with a very calm song for Ranmaru’s room,
calm music for various places, very sad music when certain things are being discussed, and panic music for when something
bad’s happening. The sad music at some parts in this game is enough to pull on your emotions even without the text to
accompany it.
The reason the sound is unrated, is because I’ve never been able to find a copy with the sound or voices sadly. Thus I
can’t rate either of those.
Gameplay: 6/10
The gameplay is probably the worst aspect of the game. At first it’s fine, just choose where to go, then go somewhere else,
etc.
But later, you get a map, and whenever you leave an area you pick somewhere on the map to go. At first it’s hardly a problem,
but later on it becomes very tiring, because you have a large area to cover, and there’s a good deal of needing to go to
one area, trigger an event, then search everywhere again to trigger another event, to trigger another, and another, and so
on. The main problem, is that alot of the time you won’t know where to go, which is a huge problem. This can make the game
take far longer than it should. That’s the problem with the gameplay.
Erotic Value: 8/10
There really isn’t that many sex scenes in the game, though when there is, they’re done very well. The graphics for the
scenes are absolutely amazing, making the sex an art in itself. And the dialogue is written much better than many other
games, which just have things like ‘oooohhh’ and ‘ahhhhh’ and they call that sex dialogue. The game is very descriptive,
and assumedly with voices it would be much better. But even without, the sex scenes are very well done.
Replay value: 7/10
There are multiple endings, 6 in total, but it’s a real pain to get them all, because there’s only 8 choices that affect it,
and depending on what you chose for them, you get 3 choices of 2 endings, based on the final decision. It’s a good idea,
but needing to play through the game again to get them, is a pain. Though you can speed through the text with ctrl if you
wish, but you’ll then have no idea where to go when it comes to the map time.
Overall: 9/10
Divi-Dead is the best H-games I’ve ever played, and probably will be my favourite until I can get a english patch for
Tsukihime. Though the game is much more centered around story than sex, so if you don’t want story, don’t play this game.
But if you do want a good story and some sex thrown in for good measure *Yes, the sex scenes in this game actually hold
a purpose other than just screwing,* then I highly recommend this game.
